EDS wins $9 million U.S. Navy contract

Electronic Data Systems (EDS) was awarded a US$9 million contract by the U.S. Navy to add a Web-based user portal to the Navy and Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI).

The contract is a separate one from the multibillion-dollar network project that was awarded to EDS last October by the Navy.

Navy spokesman Eric Mazzacone said the architecture employs a "knowledge portal" to which sailors can subscribe to get fast access via a browser to information such as pay, personnel and medical records, technical manuals, logistics and mission-critical command and control information that has been unavailable over the NMCI.

Mazzacone said although EDS will manage the land-based implementation of the portal, the Navy's Space and Warfare Systems Center in Charleston, S.C. will implement the at-sea portion of the initiative.

A spokesman for Plano, Texas-based EDS said the new NMCI portal is scheduled for implementation by the end of the year.
