Inktomi Corp. on Wednesday plans to introduce software designed to accelerate Web content delivery performance over the last mile to the user desktop.
Sitting on top of Inktomi's Traffic Server cache, Personal Edge software taps a combination of compression technology and desktop caching to improve the delivery of Web content by as much as 30 percent, according to Inktomi officials.
While Inktomi's core caching and content delivery products have traditionally focused on improving the core of the network, the company has turned its attention recently to solving the bottleneck at the network edge, said Peter Galvin, vice president and general manager for Inktomi's content networking solutions group, in Foster City, Calif.
"As we built out and improved the core of the network, we found the bottleneck changed. There were still issues with the last mile," Galvin said. "We started to look at solving the problem of the dial-up connection, like we did with solving problems in the core of the network, using caching technology and differential compression to lower costs and improve the last mile."
Personal Edge includes a Personal Edge Agent, which works with the Web browser and caching at the desktop to speed dynamic and static Web page delivery; a Page Server, which limits the amount of data transmitted over the last mile by only sending the changes to a page; and the Personal Edge Extension, which provides the communication link between a Traffic Server cache and desktop components.
