Mitel, HP to work on IP telephony products

Mitel Networks Corp. Tuesday announced a strategic agreement with Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) to provide customers with advanced converged voice and data products.

Canada-based Mitel said the memorandum of understanding with HP forms a strategic partnership in the emerging IP (Internet protocol) telephony market aimed at delivering customer-focused, converged communications products.

The agreement involves joint product development, sales and marketing, and solution delivery planning, Mitel said. The two companies said they would examine opportunities for the further integration of product lines in network infrastructures, desktop peripherals and mobile connectivity.

The deal marks the latest step in Mitel's plans to partner with industry leaders in data networking technology and products. Mitel said that it expects to establish additional partnerships in selected markets in North America and has recently announced similar relationships with L.M. Ericsson Telephone Co. and Symbol Technologies.

In related news, on Monday, Mitel and March Networks announced a co-marketing and global distribution agreement. Under the terms of the agreement, March and Mitel will jointly promote eachother's IP-based products. Broadband multimedia applications and development platforms from March will complement Mitel's telephony products, the companies said.
