Optus outsources $20m Web support to CSC

Optus has outsourced its Web sites to Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC), in a deal worth $20 million.

The five-year contract will cover the support and maintenance of various Optus Web sites, as well as the development of applications and infrastructure.

Julia Bowen, Optus director program, said: "A key area for CSC initially will be around an infrastructure build. We are going to have new products and services on our Web-based offerings. CSC will be concentrating on building the infrastructure for this, including security. Basically it will be building the core that will be reused as a business intelligence function."

As part of the deal, CSC will employ just under 30 of Optus' Web enablement team and become preferred supplier for Web-enabled development and maintenance services. Another 10 team members, mainly involved in architecture and high level design, will move across to Optus' IT team, Bowen said"The existing infrastructure will allow rapid application deployment and the ability to operate across different technology platforms including handheld computers and WAP (wireless application protocol)."

Bowen said Optus would continue to outsource systems development to meet business objectives.
