Sony teams to offer PlayStation AOL access

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) and America Online (AOL) announced Tuesday they will cooperate to make AOL services available via Sony's PlayStation 2 computer game platform.

Under the new alliance, SCEI will offer PlayStation 2 users a network adapter that enables them to access such AOL features as instant messaging, chat and e-mail, and to play Internet-enabled games and entertainment, the companies said in a joint statement.

Also in the works is a Netscape browser for PlayStation 2, and additional hardware including a hard disk drive, LCD display, keyboard and mouse, to enable improved Net surfing. The AOL features will also be incorporated into the PlayStation 2 software development kits (SDKs) available to content developers.

The new services are expected to be available by the end of the year, SCEI and AOL said.
