Mobile number portability on track

The Australian Communications Authority (ACA) has advised that the introduction of mobile number portability is on track for a September 25 start.

Mobile number portability will allow customers to keep their mobile phone number when they change service providers.

Dr Bob Horton, deputy chair of the ACA said the organisation was pleased with the progress the industry has made to date.

"It is now up to individual carriers and service providers to put [Australian Communications Industry Forum] … plans into action, and to take part in the testing of procedures. Our reports back from CEOs and senior executives have indicated a strong commitment to meeting the launch date."

Horton said that, although the introduction of mobile number portability was on track, industry players had raised a number of issues that may impact on their ability to the meet the deadline, including the exact definition of 'number portability' and claims by some carriers that they are not mobile carriage services providers.
