Lucent Technologies may lay off more than 10,000 additional employees, according to a report Wednesday in The Wall Street Journal newspaper.
Though the exact number of layoffs is still undecided, the company will announce its plans when it reports third quarter earnings in July, according to the report.
The additional layoffs would come on top of the 10,000 job cuts the company announced last January. Lucent currently employees 104,000 people worldwide, according to its Web site, but the company is looking to cut that number below 80,000, the report said.
The company believes it will eliminate 12,000 jobs through the sale of its fiber-optic business and two manufacturing plants, and a further 13,000 employees are being offered an early retirement package, according to the report.
Lucent could not immediately be reached for comment.
