Portfolio break up panned

IT Minister Senator Richard Alston has labelled plans by the Opposition toseparate telecommunications and IT under a Labor government as "illogical". Asreported in CW (June 11, 2001 p1) IT opposition spokesperson Senator Kate Lundysaid the two will be separated as "telecommunications is basically a regulatoryportfolio".

Senator Alston said it beggars belief that in a world of convergingtechnologies Labor wants to go back to the structural arrangements of the lastcentury. He said this "ludicrous proposition" is all about Senator Lundyjockeying for a junior portfolio.
