ICT professionals get jobs compass

Confused on what jobs a Nortel certified architect might be qualified for? Want to know the types of skills you need to become a Web developer? Or wondering how a Cisco network certified professional certification stacks up against a Microsoft certified professional in the eyes of ICT employers?

Global IT trade group The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) is claiming its newly launched TechCareer Compass will help any working professionals involved in the IT industry answer questions about ICT-related jobs, certifications and career paths.

According to CompTIA, the TechCareer Compass is a free “Web guidance tool” designed as a ICT “repository” for information and resources relating to IT jobs and skill sets.

CompTIA US vice president of workforce development and training Neill Hopkins said while the compass can be used by IT professionals for job information, it can also be helpful for employers needing help with writing job descriptions, locating training and educational materials, identifying qualified candidates and designing employee career maps.

The globally available site is broken down into six different areas, ranging from categories for those new to the IT industry or trying to find an ICT-related job, to sections for employers and training providers.

The 100-plus job descriptions listed in the Compass site are then divided into seven groups: Web development and administration, digital media, programming, technical writing, network infrastructure, network devices and database development and administration. As well as an overview of each position, jobs are further broken down into critical work functions, skills categories and alternate job titles, as well as by entry, intermediate or senior level.

The site also features a list of certification providers, as well as descriptions of each certification offered by the vendor and its training providers. Users can further narrow the search by identifying which type of training organisation and method they would prefer.

CompTIA says around 750 ICT industry-wide certifications are now listed on the Web site, including its own vendor-neutral range of qualifications.

Specific job classified sites listed on the Compass "Job Bank" are however restricted to North America.

The TechCareer Compass site was developed by CompTIA in association with IBM, Intel, Cisco and CompuCom.
