When it comes to advanced cyber security, the challenge lies in educating the powers that be about how advanced targeted attacks work and how successful they have been.
The observation comes the way of FireEye world wide sales vice president, Jeff Williams, who highlights the difficulty in educating the masses about how cyber threats come to existence and what damage they have done.
“The challenge is also getting our message across that we have solution to the problem,” he said.
Williams says that FireEye regularly puts out several advanced threat reports, and engages with analyst groups and the media about the fact that cyber security threats are not only sophisticated, but the people behind them are “extremely capable, motivated and persistent.”
“They are very aggressive in using highly sophisticated and targeted malware to break into companies,” he said.
“That is why we work with our partners and distributors to get them up to speed on the threats that their customers are facing.”
The last 18 months have been busy for the vendor, having released FireEye Email MPS (Malware Protection System) in early 2011 to targeted the email threat vector, as well as coupling it with its web solution to protect against both vectors.
The other big development for FireEye in 2011 was when a big botnet pulled down early in the year, which was the largest spamming botnet at the time.
“We worked with Microsoft and Federal law enforcement in the US to take that cyber criminal infrastructure down,” Williams said.
From a business standpoint, Williams calls 2011 a “banner year” for the company, as well as for the growth and visibility of the market.
“There was a lot of positive cyber action proving to the world at large that small companies such as FireEye can make a major impact in cyber security,” he said.
The goal for 2012 has been to capitalise on the “key opportunities are stemming from the excitement” from last year, as well as visibility into the cyber threat landscape.
In particular, there has been the advanced persistent threats (APT), which has accelerated in terms of impacting not only governments but major industries around the world.
“We are hearing a lot from our partners like WhiteGold Solutions in Australia and other reseller partners across Asia Pacific that this is catching the attention of the defence industry and major multinational organisations in fields such as mining,” Williams said.
“So for us, this year is really about expansion and making ourselves more well-known globally.”
