Toshiba encourages wireless adoption

Toshiba has launched into a promotion designed to boost uptake in the wireless networking market by offering free Internet access and a wireless LAN card in two of its notebook models.

Throughout this month, every Satellite Pro 4600 and Tecra 8200 purchased will incorporate four free hours of Skynet Global Wireless Internet access and a free Mini PCI wireless LAN card. The card is worth around $313 in stores and Toshiba estimates its program will cost just $38 per user, making wireless solutions particularly attractive to new offices and small businesses.

"Businesses will notice a dramatic improvement in productivity and return on their computing investment," said Toshiba's national market manager, Mark Whittard.

Toshiba will also tout its "three steps to unplug" program to help users get wireless.

As well as educating end users, the program will also give the channel an additional point of differentiation in the market, according to Toshiba industry marketing manager, Lesley MacLennan.

"One of the ongoing concerns in IT is the role of the reseller," she said. "This will give resellers a very strong reason to talk to the customers."

"Our resellers are going to be an important part of the initiative because their role is oriented around the additional services they can provide, such as integration, and selling components and services," she said.

Reseller can also set up their own wireless networks as a showcase of the technology.

"We are trying to demystify the whole wireless area, and give our resellers additional sales tools with which to approach their customers."
