Westpac and ERG partner on smart cards

The Westpac Group and transit ticketing specialist ERG plan to introduce integrated smart card-based transit ticketing solutions to the general payments industry next year.

The organisations will collaborate in developing solutions for applications including e-commerce and home banking. Westpac is set to become the principal Eftpos transaction processor for ERG's e-purse reload and ticketing products.

Officials said the Westpac group would directly support ERG and its alliance partners in bidding for smart card systems, such as the NSW government's recently proposed ticketing system.

Perceivably, Westpac customers would be able to use the same card for general credit and debit purchases, as a ticket for public transport and for small-value transactions in the transit corridors across Australia, officials said.
