Telstra sees need for speed on mobile Internet

Telstra has announced that Speedwise Technologies' Accellence will be deployed over Telstra's mobile networks toprovide accelerated wireless Internet browsing.

The solution, to be installed over the telco's GSM, CDMA and GPRS networks, uses compression technology to providefaster Internet access for customers using laptops, handheld devices and other HTML-enabled devices.

David Kaye, Telstra's product strategy manager, said: "Customers can expect to download data at speeds almost twice asfast of currently available."

The Speedwise solution involves the installation of a server between the Internet and the wireless access network.

Background HTTP data is compressed when passing through the server, reducing the number of data packets sent over thenetwork.

It also uses algorithms to display text and links prior to images, ensuring users can navigate between sites ratherthan waiting for large images to download before the required information is received.

Users can also determine the amount of compression required by configuring their browser to the desired graphicacceleration rate.
