In Network World's two-part test, reviewers David Newman and Joel Snyder put next-generation firewalls through the ringer. They found that products could forward packets at an impressive clip but throughput dropped with advanced security features were turned on.
The four products tested from Barracuda, Check Point, SonicWall and Fortinet raced to the top of the chart but our reviewers found areas where improvement is needed. SonicWall came the closest to perfection by identifying and blocking 26 of the 40 test applications.
In the other part of the test, the overall conclusion was that next-gen firewalls are getting faster, and the tradeoff between speed and security is getting smaller. Again in this part of the test forwarding rates fell when SSL decryption was turned on.
