Data security on PCI Security Standards Council’s APAC agenda

Council to hold inaugural Asia Pacific conference in Singapore next month

In an effort to increase payment security awareness in the Asia Pacific region, the PCI Security Standards Council is holding an APAC event for the first time.

Up for discussion in Singapore during June will be Cloud computing, e-commerce security, risk assessments and data security. Twelve Australian organisations are members of the Council including supermarket chain operator, Woolworths, which is an advisory board member.

PCI Security Standards Council general manager, Bob Russo, told Computerworld Australia that while PCI adoption continues to grow, it recognised that its 40 APAC members had questions about technologies such as point-to-point encryption.

“We’ve recently announced updates to our point-to-point encryption program, and produced guidance for merchants on how to securely accept mobile payments with a smartphone or tablet,” he said.

“These are issues our constituents asked for, so we continue to focus on these areas and deliver resources that help them in their payment security efforts,” Russo said.

Turning to mandatory data breach notifications which are still under discussion in Australia, the Council would be examining payment card data standards during the conference including the PCI Data Security Standards which provide a framework for developing a payment card data security process including prevention, detection and appropriate reaction to security incidents.

“Organisations in Australia can connect with others in the [APAC] region to share best practices and lessons learned at meetings like this one in Singapore, but also across industries who are facing many of the same issues and challenges when it comes to securing payment data,” Russo said.
