Singapore awards additional 2G spectrum rights

The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) has awarded provisional second generation mobile (2G) additional spectrum rights to all three local telecommunication carriers - MobileOne (Asia) Pte. Ltd., Singapore Telecom Mobile Pte. Ltd. and StarHub Mobile Pte. Ltd.

Originally, six 2G spectrum lots were up for auction at the reserve price of S$120,000 (US$68,500) each and only incumbent mobile network operators qualified to bid for the 2G spectrum rights.

But as only six initial offers were received by IDA (two from each telecommunication carrier), there was no need for an auction and thus each carrier will be awarded two 2G spectrum lots at the reserve price, each valid for seven years, if they make payment to IDA by 7 September 2001.

According to IDA, the additional spectrum is offered to cater for expansion of the mobile licensees' current operations enhancement of the range and quality of services offered.
