Two thirds of Australians are now shopping online, with 40 per cent increasing online spending over the past 12 months, a new report claims.
Released today, the Sensis e-business report found that while customer loyalty to Australian brands was high across a variety of age groups, some 38 per cent of consumers in their 20s said they purchased online goods from retailers overseas.
Report author Christine Singh said the high Australian dollar had led to some consumers using websites based overseas, but that Australian retailers shouldn’t be overly concerned.
“The findings suggest 29 per cent of online purchases are made with overseas businesses, but the majority of expenditure is still being spent locally.” she said.
The report is based on interviews with some 1000 consumers from across Australia. Singh said the results show that Australians are embracing the digital world of mobility and social media.
“We can see that mobile web use has grown in the older age groups, with almost half of Australians in their 40s connecting via mobile and a third of those in their 50s,” she said.
The report found that some 87 per cent of Australians in their 30s purchase goods online; 80 per cent of those in their 20s and 79 per cent of those in their 40s also shop using the internet.
