CityRail has given an update on its online ticketing system, reporting a 342 per cent increase of ticket registrations between July 2010 and July 2011.
In a statement from the New South Wales train authority, CityRail said the popularity of the system stems from its ease of use.
“This is attributable to a number of factors, including the convenience of online purchasing and also recent fare reductions for long-term rail fares that were introduced on 1 July 2011,” the statement read.
“Online sales for periodical tickets in July 2011 were 30 per cent higher than July in 2010.”
The online purchasing system was introduced in April last year and reviewed in February by some 1879 users, with the authority saying the results of the review showed customers were satisfied but wanting more incentives to purchase tickets online.
“Comments from potential customers indicated they were after further incentives to purchase online,” the statement read.
“[These included] cheaper delivery of tickets, a wider range of ticket options for sale online, more delivery and payment options and enhanced usability.”
The survey also indicated that some 79 per cent of tickets purchased were yearly or quarterly fares.
CityRail was the focus of a technical investigation earlier this year, after a signalling issue in April caused delays to 40 per cent of the Sydney metro rail network.
