Nortel Networks Corp. and IBM Corp. plan to jointly sell hardware and software for converged voice and Internet Protocol network services, the two companies announced Wednesday.
Their plan calls for using IBM's WebSphere infrastructure software, eServer xSeries servers, and DB2 database software with Nortel's Symposium contact center hardware and software systems for customer call centers and support centers.
The two companies' products are being bundled together, rather than specifically developed as an integrated single product, said Eric Ross, president for Nortel's enterprise solutions.
Together, the two companies' products will be used for VoIP (Voice over IP) services for companies phone exchanges, and used for other high-bandwidth applications in call centers, like desktop video conferencing, desktop message management for phones, faxes or e-mail, and plug-and-play portable IP phones.
Nortel has a reseller agreement with IBM's Global Services integration services division. IBM offers Nortel's optical networking systems, including Alteon Web switches and Shasta 5000 Broadband Service Nodes offerings. The two companies also offer WebSphere with Nortel's 40G bps (bits per second) optical Internet and 1G bps optical Ethernet hardware.
