Intel's Barrett urges IT execs to spend

Intel president and chief executive officer Craig Barrett on Tuesday urged attendees at Gartner Inc.'s Symposium/ITxpo to continue to spend and invest in technology or risk losing their business edge.

"What you do in a recession is you continue to invest," he said in a question-and-answer session on stage here with two Gartner analysts.

That is Intel's own approach, he said. This year, Intel is spending US$4 billion on research and development, and investing $7.5 billion in new manufacturing capacity.

"Our attitude has been to continue to innovate, invest and look to the future," Barrett said.
