Sun touts iPlanet as more secure than Microsoft's IIS

Sun Microsystems began a campaign on Monday to persuade users of Microsoft's Internet Information Services (IIS) software to switch to iPlanet Web Server, Enterprise Edition 6.0 from Sun joint venture iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions.

While all Web server technologies have security problems and have required patches in the past, iPlanet software has a better security record than IIS and is not under active attack by virus and worm writers, said Sun in a statement. Its developer, iPlanet, is a joint venture between Sun Microsystems Inc. and AOL Time Warner Inc.

IIS users can make the switch via iPlanet's site (www.iplanet.com/gosecure), said Sun. When they move their site to iPlanet Web Server, free ChiliSoft ASP (active server pages) software will let them run their Microsoft ASP pages unchanged, the company said in a statement.

The site also offers a 37 percent discount on the iPlanet Web Server software, for a price of US$940 per CPU (central processing unit) in the U.S. It is unclear whether this reduction applies in all countries.

The number of Web sites running on Microsoft IIS has continued to grow, despite warnings about its security problems.
