Telcos restore Queensland services, problems continue for some

Three notified users of continued power loss and lack of access to some sites as a result of cyclone Yasi

Vodafone has restored services in Mackay and some areas in and around Cairns following destruction left by cyclone Yasi in Queensland, but power loss and transmission link failures continue to impact those between Townsville and Bowen.

“We are making good progress with our restoration efforts despite poor weather conditions,” a Vodafone spokesperson said.

“We expect significant progress today on the sites that remain impacted and our engineers are working hard to restore these services as quickly as they can.”

Meanwhile, sister carrier Three said services between Cairns to Cooktown, Ingham to Cairns, Mackay to Sarina and Innisfail to Townsville continue to be impacted by power loss and lack of access to sites.

A spokesperson said the telco’s engineers are currently working to restore services.

In addition, Telstra says 70,000 customers remain without landline telephone services in the region struck by Cyclone Yasi.

The telco clarified the extent of service disruption, after earlier statements implied that services had been restored in the north Queensland regions affected by the cyclone.

A spokeswoman said an earlier fault in the Ingham area has been fixed, but many landline customers in the wider region affected remained without telephone service.
