Networking vendors are reporting that there are no shortages of business- or consumer-grade networking gear despite the current floods inundating thousands of businesses and homes across much of the country.
According to D-Link Australia marketing manager, Maurice Famularo, there were no issues with its supplies, largely as it has its own supply warehouse located in Sydney and can provide stock when needed.
“Any company taking advantage of the floods by inflating their prices are only taking advantage of their own back pockets at the expense of those affected,” he said.
“I believe there may be some price rise possibly due to vendors air freighting goods into Australia to speed recovery as opposed to sea freight, but would hope that this would be minimised. D-Link will not be increasing prices.”
Famularo said calculating the number of routers and switches needed to replace those damaged by the floods was difficult, but the number was likely to be sizable.
“There would be a high number of damaged broadband equipment located within the exchange and also quite a few products damaged at the CPE end,” he said. “Businesses and schools would be affected with infrastructure damage, including damaged cables. [Consumer modems and routers] would definitely be in the thousands.”
According to an HP spokesperson, inventories of the vendor’s networking gear were adequately stocked and the company was working with customers, partners and distributors to identify those with urgent requirements and in need of priority shipment.
“This will help our customers to ensure their services and business transactions are back up and running quickly,” the spokesperson said. “We anticipate that some customers will take this as an opportunity to consider wireless and also improve their core network performance.”
The spokesperson said the company was also offering “substantial additional discounts” between now and April 30 and priority shipment for bona fide flood affected businesses, via its partner network.
A Cisco spokesperson said the company had mobilised its resources to help in the recovery and rebuilding.
“Fortunately, the impact to the Cisco supply chain has been minimal,” the spokesperson said. “We understand that speed is of the essence in responding to a crisis situation and we’re committed to providing our customers and partners with the best level of service and support possible as they rebuild.”
