Queensland DCS greenlights new tape media

Technology refresh underway

A mixture of backup devices caused by a merger in March 2009 has led the Queensland Department of Community Safety to source new tape media.

According to department documents, the merger of the former Departments of Emergency Services and Corrective Services came together, caused an increased use of ICT.

“To cater for this continued growth for existing applications and implement new initiatives the Department wishes to maximise its investment in the technology that have been introduced,” the documents reads.

A number of new initiatives will make use of the Kedron Park storage area network (SAN) environment where the Department is based in Brisbane.

These plans include a remote disaster recovery site with tape libraries for business continuity purposes. Regional sites in the state have dual head tape devices which allow the creation of off site backup tapes.

“Kedron Park SAN has a number of IBM disk controllers DS8100, DS4800 and DS3400 models attached to IBM Director switches and make use of storage volume controller (SVC) for disk management,” read the documents.

Other centres use a mix of digital data storage (DDS) and super digital linear tape (SDLT) tape media at various sites across the state. In addition, the Department has another SAN located in Brisbane.

“The long term direction will be a centralised tape backup environment,” the documents read.

It requires offers for tape media formats including linear tape open (LTO), DDS and SDLT. Documents state that the LTO tape media supplied must be certified for use within IBM tape libraries.

As well as a technology refresh, the Department is in the process of deploying a Minority Report style high end audio visual system including video walls and touch screens at its operations centre in Brisbane.
