Sydney, NSW – 21 January 2004 – IBM Global Services announced today that the Victorian Department of Education & Training (DE&T) has selected IBM - Logicalis to supply Cisco Wireless Access Points and implement wireless networks in over 1,600 Victorian primary and secondary public schools. As part of this $6 million project, IBM - Logicalis will assist in the training of the in-house implementation team in the use and configuration of the technology.

The implemented solution will provide secure wireless connectivity across state school sites for teachers and students across Victoria. This will provide teachers with real-time access to education applications, tools and resources without limitations of a wired network.

Minister for Education Services, Jacinta Allan, said the Wireless Networks for Schools (WiNS) initiative will improve the ability of schools to use information and computer technologies, providing more flexible, mobile and creative approach to learning with and about computers.

General Manager for the Department’s Information Technology Division, Katrina Reynen, said, “We want to empower teachers to be able to focus on their students, not on trying to access technology. The IBM – Logicalis solution allows teachers to work without the limitations of fixed access points. It provides them with the flexibility to plan lessons, file reports and access teaching materials from anywhere in the school grounds”.

The wireless network will provide considerable support for the Notebooks for Teachers and Principals Program program, which provides Victorian teachers with notebook computers and training in technology.

According to Simon Walsh, Business Unit Executive, IBM - Logicalis, “the Department of Education & Training’s 802.11g wireless network will be the largest of its kind in the Asia Pacific region. The wireless network is expected to enhance the productivity of teachers and administrators by allowing them anytime, anywhere access to education tools and applications.

“A fundamental benefit of the wireless network is the ability to bring together multiple parties to perform their roles in a collaborative environment without being restricted by their physical locations”, said Mr Walsh.

Under the terms of the contract IBM - Logicalis will supply Victorian schools with 9,000 Cisco wireless access points, based on the 802.11g standard. The standard is specified for bandwidth up to 54mb and provides the largest surface area coverage per access point. The implementation of wireless access points, which will commence February 2005, is due to be completed mid-next year.
