Cisco, ChinaNet to build information highway

Cisco Systems Inc. will pave China's information superhighway under an agreement signed with China Telecom Ltd. to provide 500 Internet routers over the next year, the companies announced Monday.

China Telecom's ChinaNet Internet service provider will use Cisco's network equipment to expand Internet service to 300 cities in China, according to the release. In August, the two companies agreed to expand the capacity of 54 existing nodes of ChinaNet's backbone network using Cisco routers.

China Telecom intends to develop nationwide Internet services, and will use Cisco's gear as baseline technology to build multi-protocol label switching and virtual private networking, China Telecom said. China Telecom also plans to use Cisco's 12000 and 12400 series routers to help upgrade the company's telecommunications backbone to 10G bps (bits per second) speeds to accommodate increasing traffic.
