Australian Federal Police to replace Avaya?

Equipment to be decommissioned on an as-needed basis

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) is currently in the process of changing its existing IP voice solution in a bid to reduce costs.

Department documents state that the existing Avaya environment will be decommissioned when current equipment reaches the end of its useful life.

The AFP will give a minimum 90 days notice of any decommissioning of current equipment.

The documents give no indication of whether the AFP will be working with Avaya again or selecting a new vendor.

The replacement is on an ‘as needed’ basis in accordance with the Australian Government ICT Sustainability Plan 2010 – 2015, meaning the AFP is aiming to procure services and supplies which are environmentally friendly and energy efficient. It plans to reduce costs through better resource usage and waste management, setting objectives and targets for continuous improvement in the AFP's environmental management practices and building an environmentally aware business culture.

The AFP is seeking an offering that includes IP handsets, headsets and conference abilities which can support legacy systems such as analogue fax equipment.

The successful tenderer will be required to enter into a contract with the AFP for an initial period of three years, with provision to extend the term of the contract for up to two years.

The AFP is Australia’s international law enforcement and policing representative and the chief source of advice to the government on policing issues. It also provides community policing services to the Australian Capital Territory through a purchasing agreement with the ACT Government.

It is currently examining a data retention scheme as a result of fleeting data records kept by service providers for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) protocols.
