Austrade to lead Australian ICT mission to China

Will showcase local tech companies and Australia as an ICT investment destination

Austrade is to spearhead a new mission to China aimed at promoting local ICT capabilities and talking up Australia as a destination for technology investment.

The mission, starting 11 October, will include 21 Australian ICT companies and industry bodies including the Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA) and National ICT Australia (NICTA).

Australian companies attending the P&T Expo Comm China 2010 in Beijing and the Shanghai World Expo include Bond Wireless, Exinda Networks, Inference Communications, Mikoh, Obsidian Consulting, Omnistar, Quickcomm, and Smartbill.

Austrade and the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Industry (DIISR) will lead a separate mission in late October to Japan, South Korea, and Singapore to promote the benefits of the National Broadband Network (NBN).

According to Austrade’s global ICT team leader, Janelle Casey, the missions would highlight Australia’s ICT research sector’s track record of success.

“For example, Australian innovation is at the core of Wireless LAN, the technology behind Google Maps, and the Australian-developed L4 microkernel used on 800 million mobile phones worldwide,” Casey said in an emailed statement.

According to Casey, the potential for Australian technologies in China was huge with China's internet service industry expected to total some $26.44 billion in 2010, while the mobile telecoms services industry overall was valued at some $US65 billion ($AUD65.7 billion).

Participants in the two missions would benefit from having the chance to develop a direct understanding of broadband infrastructure and digital economy developments and meet potential customers, alliance partners, and policy-makers, Casey said.

“Australian companies can learn from key trading partners which already have world-leading broadband at the heart of their economies, with the mission also highlighting the potential the NBN offers to companies undertaking R&D and locating innovation activities in Australia,” she said.

In related news, Austrade, in partnership with the Australian Technology Showcase, will be leading Australian financial services technology companies on a UK ICT mission in late October.

According to Austrade, local companies attending include Payment Adviser, Solvexia, Infrarisk, Praemium, Technology One, Tier3, Sonarlogic, and GBST.
