DoS attack cripples BigPond network

Telstra's BigPond Cable and ADSL services were running smoothly on Monday after its broadband network was struck by a Denial of Service attack over the weekend.

Cable customers in Victoria and ADSL customers in all states except Queensland experienced either authentication failures or no data flow when trying to access their BigPond services on Saturday afternoon.

Telstra spokesperson Stuart Gray said the attacks lasted no longer than 35 minutes. However, he said the company was unable to trace where the attacks came from.

Gray admitted Telstra's BigPond network has suffered DoS attacks in the past. He said the attacks have become increasingly regular in the past few months.

Denial of Service attacks are those in which a target system is flooded with false requests for information with such volume that it is unable to answer legitimate requests. In Saturday's case, Telstra users were unable to access the Internet properly.
