Looking to win over more international customers, McAfee.com Corp. on Tuesday launched U.K. and German versions of its Web-based computer security services.
The launch of stripped-down versions of McAfee.com's main U.S. service represents the first phase in the McAfee.com's plan for subscription services in local European languages and currencies, McAfee.com said in a news release.
On offer at McAfee.co.uk and McAfee.de are antivirus product VirusScan Online and intruder guard Personal Firewall, McAfee.com said. The products are delivered and installed remotely through a Web browser, virtually eliminating the need for installation and configuration by the user, according to McAfee.com, which is the online services division of Network Associates Inc.
McAfee.com says it has over 1.2 million paying "subscribers." About 30 percent of those are international, from outside the U.S., according to the company.
In Europe, McAfee.com hopes to take advantage of the prevalence of broadband connections and the relatively low usage of system-protection software, the company said.
As in the U.S., VirusScan Online and Personal Firewall are sold on a subscription basis on the local sites. The prices are quoted in local currency, but are only a few cents off the U.S. prices of US$24.95 per year for VirusScan Online and $29.95 for Personal Firewall.
