France Telecom leases more capacity from Level 3

France Télécom SA has leased a 2.5G bps (bits per second) fiber-optic circuit between New York and California from Level 3 Communications Inc. to increase the company's broadband transport capacity in North America, Level 3 announced Thursday.

The French carrier is building a 15,000-mile Internet backbone in North America with Global One Communications Inc., its wholly owned U.S. subsidiary. The company previously said construction would be completed by year's end; in the meantime France Télécom plans to use the leased line to quadruple its current capacity, according to the statement.

France Télécom purchased dark fiber and related services throughout Level 3's North American network for more than $100 million in an earlier, unrelated deal.
