Enterprise resource planning giant SAP is set to tap into the burgeoning small- to medium-size enterprise (SME) market under an outsourcing agreement with Solution 6.
The agreement will see Solution 6 act as an application service provider (ASP) to provide SAP's R/3 suite over the Internet.
Richard McLean, general manager - sales and marketing at Solution 6, said this was the first global agreement of its kind.
An ASP hosts applications for users via the Internet or through private networks, McLean said. Under this model, users would rent the SAP applications from Solution 6 and access them through a browser.
McLean said the service would save users money.
"To implement SAP via the Internet means they have to invest significantly less than if they were to do it in-house," McLean said.
Additionally, hosting ERP applications via an ASP gave users a "ubiquitous" system that could be used by mobile, on-site and tele-workers, he said.
McLean said Solution 6 would initially supply SAP's core financials - procurement logistics, materials management, sales logistics, sales and distribution, external accounting, finance management, asset management and business planning and control. R/3 modules for vertical markets would be supplied later on request, he said.
