The NSW state budget for 2010-11 has been announced and will feature ICT investments across the Police, Justice and Emergency Services, and Education and Training Portfolios.
Significant ICT investment is notably absent from the Health, Transport and Roads, Human Services, Environment, Climate Change and Water portfolios.
Under the Police, Justice and Emergency Services portfolios, the state will spend $66.4 million to upgrade police technology, communications and other equipment, including 25 additional mobile police commands and vehicles with Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology.
Up to 100 additional mobile fingerprint scanners for police officers will also be acquired in addition to the NSW Government’s $5.1 million rollout of 500 mobile fingerprint scanners already underway.
Some $10.7 million will be spent to build a secure online information technology sharing platform for justice agencies, legal representatives and other parties.
$4.4 million of these funds will be spent on Joined Up Justice, an online service aimed at allowing justice agencies, such as Police, Corrective Services and Juvenile Justice to securely share information with courts.
Close to $6.2 million will go to legal e-services to allow parties and legal representatives to file documents over the Internet, without visiting a court registry.
A new operating system for the Registry of Births Deaths & Marriages that aims to better store and secure data to help prevent identity fraud, LifeLink, will receive $4.1 million.
On the Education and Training front, $78 million over four years will be spent on the Connected Classrooms initiative which seeks to expand technology-based learning in public schools with interactive whiteboards, video-conferencing facilities and online learning tools.
