Federal Government ICT suppliers to keep IP

AIIA claims win for software developers contracted to Federal Government agencies

The Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA) is claiming a win for ICT suppliers into Federal Government, announcing they will be able to retain the intellectual property rights for software they develop under contract with agencies.

In a statement, AIIA CEO, Ian Birks, described the outcome as a strong one for the industry, particularly SMEs.

“When a software company retains ownership of IP, it encourages the commercialisation of IP across the ICT sector and fosters a competitive culture of innovation. This outcome will provide immediate and long-term returns to both government and the ICT industry,” Birks said.

The change comes after negotiations between industry and both state and federal authorities and will come into effect from 1 October 2010.

“The Attorney-General’s department is to be congratulated for their understanding of these issues and the decision they have reached. We believe that this outcome will serve the interests of both Government and the industry very strongly into the future,” Birks said.
