Dell pushed past Compaq to take pole position as the world's No. 1 PC manufacturer in the first quarter of 2001, according to a study by Gartner Group's Dataquest, an industry research firm.
The study shows Dell's first-quarter PC shipments totaled 4.16 million units, an increase of nearly 35 per cent from the previous year. Compaq dropped to the No. 2 spot after reporting first-quarter sales of 3.9 million units.
Gartner officials said any victory was bittersweet, as the overall U.S. PC market posted negative year-to-year growth in the first quarter, a first in the personal computing industry's history.
