Ericsson, Nokia, Motorola plan wireless initiative

L.M. Ericsson Telephone Co., Nokia Corp. and Motorola Inc. plan to jointly announce on Thursday a new wireless initiative between the companies, according to Nokia.

"There is nothing that we can really say today, besides confirming that it is an important wireless industry initiative," said Nokia spokesman, Damian Staphonikos.

Last April 2000, Nokia, Ericsson and Motorola launched a joint project to create an open industry framework for secure, mobile electronic transactions called the Mobile Electronics Transactions (MeT) technology.

Based on existing and emerging global technologies, MeT was designed to promote joint cooperation between wireless companies in developing standards for wireless commerce security, in an effort to keep the mobile commerce arena from becoming fragmented. Thursday's news conference, to be held at 2 p.m. CET, can be accessed by telephone at +1-719-457-2637, access code 723885.
