One.Tel GSM mobile network complete

Control of Australia's fourth GSM mobile network has been handed over to owners One.Tel in Adelaide, with Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth expected to follow throughout the year.

One.Tel announced that Lucent Technologies, which was contracted to build the network, met 'final acceptance', which means the vendor has passed all key performance metrics for network quality, capacity and coverage.

The new network was launched in May last year in Sydney, and in August in other capital cities.

One.Tel signed a contract worth more than $1.1 billion with Lucent for the rollout of the national network in 1999.
