Real deal: ActivCard buys Authentic8

Digital certification solution provider ActivCard has aquired local e-security services outfit Authentic8 in an $80 million stock swap.

Over the next 12 months, the deal sees Melbourne-based Authentic8 launch its Internet Authentication Service (IAS) throughout Asia, Europe and North America, drawing on the Californian ActivCard's operations and customers in those regions.

IAS, launched in June 2000, authenticates the electronic identity of employees, customers and partners when they remotely access their organisation's computer network.

The companies' new e-security joint-service service will provide an integrated solution by combining IAS wih product and services from strategic partners Cable and Wireless Optus, Placard, eSign, Baltimore, Computer Associates and Microsoft.

Current Authentic8 customers include the Australian Taxation Office, Department of Finance and Administration and British Telecom (BT).
