IBM's DB2 7.0 for mainframes debuts

IBM Corp. last week announced DB2 7.0 for OS/390. The 64-bit database, slated to be available March 30, will provide a better engine for e-business and more support for XML, including an XML extender and an XML-aware text extender, according to the announcement. IBM previously added these features to its versions of DB2 for Windows and Unix. DB2 for OS/390 can handle nearly 1 million simultaneous users, said a company official. A new feature, Crossloader, can build databases on OS/390 with data from other relational databases.
