Travelex and partner, Eftex, have rolled out multi-currency automatic teller machines (ATM) at Sydney Airport that will give travellers the choice of instant cash in four different currencies.
According to general manager at Eftex, Paul Stewart, the 30 ATMs will offer a combination of currencies including US Dollars, New Zealand Dollars, Euro, Thai Baht, Singapore Dollars, British Pounds, Japanese Yen and Australian Dollars.
The rollout follows a six month pilot at airports in Perth, Brisbane and Melbourne of about 15 ATMs which have now become permanent installations, Stewart said.
Several machines have been added at the pilot locations, bringing the total numbers to 12 in Brisbane, 10 in Melbourne and seven in Perth.
The new ATMs will not replace human-run exchange booths at the airports, Stewart said.
“The service is very much complementary to Travelex retail presence and will never offer the range of currencies and other services offered across the counter,” he said.
The next phase of functionality for the ATMs, Stewart said, would offer inbound travellers dynamic currency conversion functionality, which will allow users to view exchange rates and fix the withdrawal price in the billing currency of their debit or credit card.
“For example a US cardholder can withdraw AUD from an ATM in Australia, but have the transaction amount displayed in USD — and processed in USD — so that the exact amount that will be debited from their account is known and accepted at the point of the transaction, rather than at a later date when they check their bank statement,” he said.
