DOCULABS CONFIRMS CITRIX ACCESS INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVES PERFORMANCE OF WEB APPLICATIONS UP TO 250%

-Benchmark Tests also Show Significant Security and Management Enhancements-

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — 21 August, 2003 — Citrix Systems, Inc., the global leader in access infrastructure solutions, has announced the results of a benchmarking study by technology consulting firm Doculabs (www.doculabs.com) that validates the performance, security and management advantages of using Citrix® MetaFrame XP™ Presentation Server, Feature Release 3, to deploy Web applications. The tests revealed significant performance enhancements – up to 250 percent – due to more efficient bandwidth utilisation, in addition to enhanced security and improved IT management. Complete results of the tests are included in the Doculabs Market Focus report titled, “Deploying Web-based Applications with Citrix MetaFrame XP Presentation Server, Feature Release 3,” available for download at http://www.citrix.com/doculabs.

“Today’s organisations are under increased pressure to simplify administration and minimise costs associated with managing applications. With the proliferation of Web applications, companies have a new opportunity to streamline application delivery and take advantage of increased reliability and performance,” said Gautam Desai, vice president of research, Doculabs, Inc. “Our tests confirmed that Citrix MetaFrame XP Presentation Server delivers bandwidth efficiencies that directly translate into performance and productivity improvements when deploying Web applications.”

Citrix customer Concentra Health Services, the nation’s leader in occupational healthcare, uses Citrix access infrastructure to enable Web-based access to applications. With more than 230 clinics treating more than 5 million patients per year, Concentra needed a method to enable its physicians and therapists to securely access and record patient data from anywhere, across any connection. The company also needed to maintain data security and version control of its critical applications.

“We needed to provide access to our Web-based physical therapy documentation applications without sacrificing the user experience,” said Wayne Dodrill, manager, systems integration, Concentra Health Services. “By deploying the Web applications via Citrix access infrastructure, we’ve greatly enhanced application performance and efficiency. Further, since multiple versions of Internet Explorer can be published within the same centralised Citrix server farm, the proper version is always associated with the corresponding Web application, eliminating Web browser conflicts and application incompatibilities on the desktop, providing a more productive, efficient and seamless user experience.”

For the benchmark tests, Doculabs evaluated the performance of a browser running on Citrix MetaFrame XP Presentation Server compared to a local Web browser deployed on a Windows desktop client, both used to access the same sites.

In addition to the benchmark tests, Doculabs interviewed numerous Citrix customers to better understand and validate the value that Citrix MetaFrame XP Presentation Server brings to their organisations. The interviews focused on the challenges and benefits of Web-based applications, as well as effective management and deployment. All organisations interviewed realised significant benefits through implementing Citrix MetaFrame XP Presentation Server, and concurred that the benefits could not be duplicated in any other environment.

Key findings of the benchmark tests and customer interviews include:
- Improved Performance: The Doculabs benchmark tests demonstrated that Citrix MetaFrame XP Presentation Server provides up to 250 percent more efficient network bandwidth utilisation than locally installed browsers, depending on the configuration and tuning options selected. The Citrix-deployed browser transferred 55 percent less data, which translates into faster response times for users. Users with low-bandwidth connections, particularly mobile and remote office workers, experienced even more pronounced performance enhancements and a predictable level of performance unattainable without Citrix MetaFrame XP Presentation Server.

- Enhanced Security: The Doculabs study showed that deploying Web applications via Citrix MetaFrame XP Presentation Server increases infrastructure security. By centralising applications and browser security settings on a server, security breaches resulting from user error or inconsistent browser security configurations are eliminated. The secure gateway feature of Citrix MetaFrame XP Presentation Server provides additional security to Web-based applications through industry-standard SSL encryption.

- Streamlined Management: Finally, the Doculabs study showed that simplified application administration and improved network manageability reduce costs significantly. Citrix MetaFrame XP Presentation Server enables companies to lower desktop browser deployment and maintenance costs through streamlined management of all client application components, including browser versions. This also allows fewer IT administrators to support more users. Moreover, Citrix MetaFrame XP Presentation Server supports numerous browser types, client devices and platforms without recoding applications, and reduces configuration issues since IT administrators can easily manage different application versions from a central server. Citrix customers validated these findings, showing that centralised management capabilities reduce total cost of ownership for IT infrastructure.

Citrix MetaFrame XP Presentation Server is the world’s most widely deployed presentation server, designed to enable IT staffs to centrally manage any custom or commercially packaged Windows®, UNIX® or Web application and provide access to them from any client device, across any network connection. As the foundation of the Citrix MetaFrame® Access Suite, Citrix MetaFrame XP Presentation Server provides highly scalable, flexible, secure and manageable access solutions that reduce computing costs and increase the utility of any information system.
