The federal government is currently seeking applications for its newly created Federation Fellowships, aimed at reversing Australia's 'brain drain' and boosting innovation.
A total of 125 fellowships funded via the Australian Research Council (ARC) will be awarded over the next five years with each recipient receiving a salary of $225,000 each year for five years.
Successful fellows must be based at an Australian university or research organisation primarily funded by the federal or state governments. The host institution must match dollar-for-dollar the fellows' salary.
Preference will be given to Australian citizens currently working here or abroad. However, up to five of the fellowships each year may be awarded to high-profile non-Australian researchers from overseas.
The closing date for the first round of 25 fellowships is June 22, 2001. Winners are expected to be announced in September this year.
