Linux Australia: domain has a future

Linux Australia president not threatened by a cloud over the future use of in Australian domain space

The organisation that owns the domain name is nonplussed at the possibility it could be killed off by the Australian Domain Name Administrator (AUDA).

This week, the AUDA called for proposals regarding the future of the second-level domain names (2LDs) and

Linux Australia president, Stewart Smith said the group, which runs an annual Linux and open source conference using the domain name, was not threatened by the AUDA move.

Instead, Linux Australia plans to submit a proposal addressing the future purpose of the domain.

“We would like to have it stick around because we believe it’s a pretty good domain name, it simply says what it is and it may also be useful for others,” Smith said.

The AUDA has called for public submissions regarding the use of the dormant 2LDs as part of a wider plan which invites people to submit proposals for the creation of a potentially unlimited number of new 2LDs in the .au domain space. The body has also said it does not intend to kill off the 2LDs, but rather re-invigorate them for future use.

Linux Australia is currently the only registered organisation using the domain, and they have been doing so since 2001.

Smith said although there are other URLs around where people can find information about the Linux event, the organisation would like to use into the future.

“Worst case scenario is it’s not the end of the world, [the URL] is not the primary part of, the primary part is the conference itself and to make sure it’s strong. People will find us no matter where it’s hosted.”
