VA Linux Ups Server Ante

VA Linux Systems Inc. Tuesday rolled out a four-way 700MHz Pentium III-based system that company officials promised will be targeted at users looking to speed e-commerce or Web serving applications.

The new model 4450, which can be rack-mounted in a 4-unit, or 7-inches-high form factor, features three independent PCI buses, 64-bit PCI card slots, and a 66MHz PCI bus, which helps quicken RAID and Gigabit Ethernet performance. The system can be set up to hold five 36-gigabyte hard drives.

Designed from the ground up to avoid downtime, according to company officials, the system features five hot swappable hard drives, three hot-swappable power supplies, and six hot swappable fans. The system also has a 5.25-in bay that holds tape drives.

"Customers who need fast computing power to analyze and process large amounts of data we think can benefit form this system. They can also combine it with the [VA Linux] 9008 2-unit storage system to get more scalable multi-terabyte support for their most important data," said Gregg Zehr, vice president of engineering at VA Linux, based in Sunnyvale, Calif.

The system comes standard with the company's 6.2 version of the VA Linux operating system, which is tailored to take advantage of Oracle Corp's 8i database. Those users however, who need customized versions of the system can use the company's recently-announced Build-To-Order Selector intended to allow users to mix and match the hardware and software combinations that best suites their particular application.

Users with industrial strength applications can leverage the model 4450 to run the company's Cluster Management software that remotely manages large numbers of servers.

Users can also call upon the company's Professional Consulting Services group to install, configure, and otherwise better fine-tune the system to their individual business. The 4450 has been tested and configured for optimal performance in running the more popular versions of Linux, including those from Red Hat Inc. and Caldera Systems Inc.
