Smartcard numbers double in two years

Visa International has announced its worldwide issue of 42 million smart cards, 15 per cent of which were distributed in the Asia-Pacific region. Smart cards, chip-based payment cards, provide users with a variety of new services and higher levels of security. They are a key lever in the credit card company's goal of enabling u-commerce, universal commerce - the ability to conduct commerce anywhere, anytime and over any type of device. Rajiv Kapoor, general manager and executive VP, marketing and product sales for Visa Asia-Pacific said the audited figure of 23 million smart cards two years ago had nearly doubled.
