Online retail spending in the U.S. declined slightly in the second quarter compared to a year earlier, a sign that economic difficulties are still affecting this market, comScore said| on Monday.
U.S. consumers spent $30.2 billion on products from online retailers in the second quarter, down one per cent from the same quarter in 2008. This is only the second time that U.S. online retail spending has shown a quarterly year-on-year decline. Spending stayed flat in the first quarter and fell three per cent in the fourth quarter of 2008.
The fastest growing online retail categories in this year's second quarter were toys and hobbies, up 21 per cent from a year earlier; books and magazines, up 17 per cent; and video games, consoles and accessories, which were up 15 per cent, according to comScore.
