Swedish telecommunications equipment maker L.M. Ericsson Telephone Co. says it is to upgrade the telecommunications network of WorldCom Inc., integrating circuit-switched and data traffic on a single network.
Ericsson announced Thursday that it will deliver its Engine platform to the Jackson, Mississippi-based telecommunications operator. Engine, a product of Ericsson's Multi-Service Networks division, migrates circuit-switched networks into a single network based on ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) and IP (Internet protocol) packet switching technologies. The result is a converged network, combining voice and data.
No financial details of the order were given.
WorldCom plans to carry out the upgrade in stages throughout this year, according to the statement from Ericsson.
