SAP, Mercury Interactive partner to test NetWeaver

SAP America announced Tuesday that it will integrate a component of Mercury Interactive's LoadRunner performance optimization product into its NetWeaver platform. The LoadRunner component will give SAP's global technical support team the ability to do a remote test for a customer before the customer goes live with a new application.

The NetWeaver environment by its very nature supports a great deal of application integration and custom application development. The need for load and performance testing prior to going live is more critical than when deploying packaged applications, according to Christopher Lochhead, chief marketing officer at Mercury Interactive.

The LoadRunner application can simulate any number of users as well as simulate different user environments in order to measure how an application will perform and its response time.

"We can simulate or mimic a product environment to a high degree of certainty," said Lochhead.

Brian Zrimsek, research vice president at Gartner, said the partnership with Mercury Interactive is key to getting the NetWeaver platform deployed. "Mercury Interactive is one of the few companies (in this space) that we at Gartner give a strong rating to," said Zrimsek.

The joint agreement entails SAP Active Global Support (AGS) using its Go Live Check Service with LoadRunner. Six to eight weeks prior to a customer deploying an application, Go Live Check Service will do a remote load test for that customer.

"If they find a problem, SAP will refer the customer to Mercury Interactive's performance optimization service to work through the problems," said Rod Lehman, senior director of marketing at Mercury Interactive.

Mercury Interactive's Lochhead also said that as companies transition to NetWeaver and SOAs, an optimization layer that allows IT to measure and monitor the availability and performance of all the key components of the composite application is needed.

"From what we are seeing, SOAs are in their first stages. Customers are beginning to experiment with this," said Lochhead. "The major barrier before they go live is there are no customized systems that insure third-party components will work as advertised," said Lochhead.

The Go Live Check Service using LoadRunner is available now.
