Integrity Unleashes DragonWave

 • 25 November, 2003 09:28

Wireless pioneer Integrity Data Systems has introduced revolutionary technology that slashes 25 per cent from the cost of setting up broadband wireless links in Australia.

Designed by Canadian firm DragonWave, the AirPair 100 technology is designed from the ground up to transfer Internet Protocol (IP) based data at 100 megabits per second (Mbps), a breakthrough compared with the systems adapted from analogue voice technology that have preceded it.

DragonWave's AirPair 100, which costs from $60,000 for a pair of licensed 100 Mbps links, dramatically simplifies the process of installing and maintaining the links. Its purpose-built design for data delivers the quality of service and carrier-grade availability that are essential for point-to-point wireless broadband services.

Integrity Data Systems CEO Ross Chiswell said DragonWave would open up new markets for wireless point-to-point broadband. "We've looked for some time for a licensed 100 Mbps product that wasn't an adaptation of a previous generation product designed for analogue voice," he said.

"DragonWave is a licensed 100 Mbps Ethernet-based microwave unit, built from the ground up to handle data - specifically IP - traffic. The AirPair's integrated aerial and outdoor unit, along with its power over Ethernet, means that installers who previously were unable to offer products in the licensed microwave market can now supply it to enterprise customers."

AirPair is a compact and easy unit to install. The device integrates an aerial and a climate-resistant outdoor unit, obtaining its electricity via an Ethernet-like cable. Other units require thick and expensive coax cable to connect the aerial with a mains-powered indoor unit, typically stored in a data room. Initial beneficiaries of this breakthrough technology include university campuses, Tier Two carriers and enterprise organisations.

Mr. Chiswell said that while AirPair was a big-ticket item, it represented a good return on investment for enterprise customers such as universities. "DragonWave makes it easy to implement their own systems," he said.

"It's ideal for linking campuses that are in the 10-20 km line-of-site range. DragonWave has also approached the issue of maintaining mission-critical links by ensuring you can ensure support and back up of the link with an attractive spare parts bundle.
"AirPair is also ideal for the last mile wireless access for next generation carriers."

The DragonWave AirPair 100 ranges from $55,916 to $75,272 (ex GST), depending on antenna size. For more information about DragonWave, visit http://www.dragonwaveinc.com/.
