Sonic Foundry debuts new media management suite

Sonic Foundry unveiled its new media management software suite Tuesday, offering to help organizations archive, organize and search their digital media assets and publish them on the Web.

With MediaSite Publisher Version 5.0, companies can use their video, audio and text content to create online reference libraries, as well as marketing and training tools and other applications.

In addition to video cataloguing, indexing and publishing, users can also export and import textual information, such as e-mail, notes, transcripts and other documents, into a data index to supplement video descriptions.

The XML (Extensible Markup Language) export function also allows for other search engines to re-use the media data.

The software suite is powered by MediaSite Inc.'s analysis engine, which uses technologies such as speech recognition and language analysis to place tags in the content that can then be searched and indexed, according to Sonic Foundry Vice President of Strategic Solutions and Alliances James Dias. Sonic Foundry purchased MediaSite late last year.

The search technology provides a variety of ways for media to be described, located and viewed, the company said.

The Madison, Wisconsin, media software and services provider said that the newest version of the software also allows for optional plug-in modules such as real-time speech indexing, PowerPoint indexing, image match indexing and highlights indexing.

A MediaSite Publisher Version 5.0 workstation is priced at between US$25,000 and $30,000, depending on which modules are incorporated, according to Dias.

A workstation and server for publishing to the Web can range between $50,000 and $75,000, Dias said.

The products are currently available in the U.S. and the company has plans to make them available globally sometime this year.
